The Word He Coined

Aime Cesaire coined the word negritude in his long poem Cahier d'un retour au pays natal, written across the 1930s and first published in a French literary magazine in 1939. Cesaire used the word to name a defiant, affirmative pride in Black identity and African cultural heritage, deliberately reclaiming a term rooted in a French racial slur and inverting it into a badge of self-assertion against colonial assimilation. The poem itself is a book length meditation on returning to his native Martinique, and it remained the founding text most closely associated with Negritude for the rest of the movement's history.
