Three Movements of a Desert Ode

This article records tradition as it has been passed down and reported. Its sources are not yet part of the atlas's verified catalogue.

A classical qasida does not wander; it moves through three set stages the way a symphony moves through set movements, and a listener steeped in the form could follow where a poet stood in the structure just by listening. The poem opens with the nasib, a passage of loss and longing usually set at the traces of an abandoned desert campsite, the poet lingering over signs of a departed beloved or a departed tribe. It then turns to the rahil, a journey passage built around a description of the poet's own camel or horse, an interlude of movement and physical detail that carries the poem away from the opening's grief. The poem closes with the fakhr, a boast, originally a tribal boast asserting the poet's own group's virtues, that later use, especially at royal courts, reshaped into panegyric addressed directly to a patron. Holding the whole structure together is a formal discipline few other traditions attempt at this length: a single meter and a single end-rhyme, a monorhyme, sustained without variation across poems that can run past eighty lines.
