Writing After the Attack

On August 12, 2022, as Salman Rushdie was about to take the stage to speak at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York, a man rushed the stage and stabbed him repeatedly in the face, neck and abdomen; Rushdie survived but lost sight in one eye and the use of one hand. His attacker, who told investigators he had read only a small portion of The Satanic Verses, was later convicted and sentenced to prison. Rushdie wrote about the attack, his hospitalization and his recovery in the memoir Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder, published in 2024.
