Fernando Antonio Nogueira de Seabra Pessoa was a Portuguese poet, writer, literary critic, translator, and publisher described as one of the most significant literary figures of the twentieth century and one of the greatest poets in Portuguese literature; he also wrote in and translated from English and French. He was a prolific writer both under his own name and under approximately seventy five other names, of which three stand out, Alberto Caeiro, Alvaro de Campos, and Ricardo Reis, which he called heteronyms rather than pseudonyms because he felt the term did not capture their independent intellectual lives.
