A Colombian novelist and journalist, the writer most closely associated with magical realism and, through the international success of One Hundred Years of Solitude, the figure who brought Latin American fiction to a global readership on an unprecedented scale. Raised largely by his grandparents in the small Colombian town of Aracataca, he later said their household, his grandmother's matter-of-fact way of relating supernatural family stories alongside ordinary ones, was the direct source of the narrative voice he developed in his fiction. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982.
