Rabindranath Tagore

Rabindranath Tagore was a Bengali poet, author, playwright, musician, composer, philosopher and painter, and one of the foremost figures of the Bengal Renaissance. In 1913 he became the first Indian and non-European to win a Nobel Prize in any category, and the first lyricist to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, honored above all for the poetry collection Gitanjali. He wrote and composed the national anthems of both India and Bangladesh, reshaped Bengali literature and music, and founded Visva-Bharati University, while also writing as a humanist and internationalist who denounced the British Raj and advocated Indian independence.
