A lyric poem of sustained praise or exalted address, typically marked by elevated diction and formal structure. The classical tradition divides into two lines: the Pindaric ode, modeled on Pindar's choral odes for Greek athletic victors, built from triads of strophe, antistrophe and epode that mirrored the movements of a dancing chorus, and the Horatian ode, modeled on Horace's quieter, meditative Latin lyrics, built from regular repeating stanzas meant for private reading rather than public performance. English poets from the seventeenth century onward developed a looser variant, the irregular or Cowleyan ode, which keeps the form's elevated address and public occasion but abandons a fixed stanza pattern, as in Wordsworth's Intimations of Immortality and Keats's odes to a nightingale and a Grecian urn.
