The literature of Britain during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837 to 1901), marked by the rise of the great serialized novel, an explosion of periodical prose, and a sage-writing tradition, Thomas Carlyle chief among its founders, that used essays and lecture-derived books to press moral and social argument on an industrializing nation. It followed Romanticism and shares some of its concerns while turning them toward social reform, historical narrative and the built world of the factory and the city.
