Because I Could Not Stop for Death is a lyrical poem by Emily Dickinson, first published posthumously in Poems: Series 1 in 1890; since Dickinson's work was never authorized for publication during her lifetime, it is unknown whether the poem was completed or abandoned. Its speaker meets a personified Death, portrayed as a gentleman riding a horse carriage that picks up the speaker and carries her on a journey to the afterlife; according to Thomas H.
