A 1959 antinovel by the American author William S. Burroughs, first published as The Naked Lunch. Structured as a nonlinear sequence of loosely connected episodes narrated by the heroin-addicted William Lee, it draws on Burroughs's own addiction and travels and became a landmark of the Beat Generation, surviving a prominent obscenity trial in Massachusetts in the 1960s that helped establish stronger First Amendment protection for literature in the United States.
