Nausea (La Nausee, 1938) is Jean-Paul Sartre's first novel, presented as the diary of Antoine Roquentin, a historian gripped by a physical revulsion at the sheer, unjustified existence of things. It gave literary existentialism its first fictional form, dramatizing themes Sartre would later formalize in his philosophical treatise Being and Nothingness.
