No Exit (Huis Clos, 1944) is Jean-Paul Sartre's best known play, staging three strangers locked together for eternity in a single room that turns out to be Hell. Its closing line, spoken by Garcin, 'Hell is other people,' became one of the twentieth century's most quoted phrases, dramatizing Sartre's account of how the gaze of others fixes and confines the self.
