Siddhartha

Siddhartha: An Indian Novel is a 1922 novel by Hermann Hesse, Hesse's ninth novel, dealing with the spiritual journey of self-discovery of a man named Siddhartha during the time of the Gautama Buddha, written in German in a simple, lyrical style. It was published in the United States in 1951 by New Directions Publishing and became influential during the 1960s; Hesse dedicated the first part to the French writer Romain Rolland and the second part to his cousin Wilhelm Gundert. The name Siddhartha combines two Sanskrit words, siddha, meaning achieved, and artha, meaning what was searched for, together meaning he who has found meaning of existence, and in the novel the Buddha himself, whose own name before his renunciation was also Siddhartha Gautama, is referred to by the Pali name Gotama.
