An 1854 book by the American transcendentalist writer Henry David Thoreau, first published as Walden; or, Life in the Woods. It reflects on the two years, two months and two days Thoreau spent living in a self-built cabin near Walden Pond in Massachusetts, presenting the experiment as a deliberate withdrawal from conventional society in pursuit of a simpler, more self-reliant and more attentive way of life, and it remains a foundational text of American nature writing and environmental thought.
