An English novelist, essayist and central figure of literary Modernism, best known for developing stream of consciousness narration into a fully realized novelistic technique. Her novels Mrs Dalloway (1925), To the Lighthouse (1927) and The Waves (1931) render a character's continuous inward experience directly, moving between different characters' perceptions within a single scene rather than following a single external plot line. She was also a member of the Bloomsbury Group, an influential circle of English writers, artists and intellectuals centered in early twentieth-century London, and her extended essay A Room of One's Own (1929) is a foundational text of feminist literary criticism. She died in 1941, having suffered recurring severe depressive episodes across her adult life.
