A novel following a single June day in 1923 London as Clarissa Dalloway prepares for a party she will host that evening, its narration moving fluidly between her thoughts and those of other characters, including the shell-shocked war veteran Septimus Warren Smith, without conventional chapter breaks. Its continuous, associative rendering of interior thought is among the most fully realized examples of stream of consciousness narration in the English novel.
